Anotasi

An Alternative Knowledge Space for Critical Youth

How might we mobilize social sciences and humanities to be accessible, engaging, and relevant for Indonesian youth?

Anotasi was created from a belief that social sciences and humanities play a crucial role in fostering critical thinking and empathy among young people. Yet in Indonesia, access to this knowledge remains limited. Research is often locked behind paywalls, presented in rigid formats, written in intimidating academic language, and difficult to engage with amid low literacy levels. These barriers prevent many young people from encountering ideas that could help them better understand society, power, and lived experiences. Anotasi emerged as an attempt to open alternative pathways—bringing critical knowledge closer to everyday life.

Mobilizing Knowledge Beyond Academia

To reach audiences outside academic circles, Anotasi collaborates with academics, researchers, designers, artists, and content creators to translate social sciences and humanities into accessible digital formats. Knowledge is mobilized through websites, podcasts, and online events, designed to invite curiosity rather than demand expertise. Anotasi also intentionally reshapes how social sciences are perceived. Through playful branding, approachable language, and simple visual systems, complex ideas are presented without losing their depth. Since its launch in 2019, Anotasi has grown an organic community of over 300,000 readers and engaged more than 300 contributors, including journalists, academics, and activist, becoming a shared digital space for critical young minds.
