Designing a Shared Home for Collaborative Ethnographic Learning

How might we design a digital platform that supports collaborative ethnographic learning and knowledge-sharing across researchers, activists, and communities in Indonesia?

Jaringan Etnografi Terbuka was envisioned as a shared learning and community platform for researchers, activists, and civil society actors working with ethnographic approaches in Indonesia. The platform aims to open access to knowledge, experiences, and conversations around ethnographic methods—making them less siloed within academia and more connected to communities and lived realities. Rather than positioning research as a top-down practice, Jaringan Etnografi Terbuka seeks to nurture collaborative and creative ways of learning. The platform invites different forms of knowledge to coexist, allowing researchers, activists, and communities to learn from one another and develop methods together.

Grounding the Platform in Context and Practice

In designing the website and brand identity, we focused on creating an environment that feels open, welcoming, and grounded in the Indonesian context. The platform reflects the country’s cultural diversity and uneven digital access, while remaining flexible enough to support a wide range of users and learning formats. The design approach treats participants not as problems to be fixed, but as capable, curious, and resilient individuals. Alongside the website, the brand system was developed to help the organization build a consistent presence across online events and social media, supporting long-term community growth and knowledge-sharing beyond a single platform.
